GRADE REQUIREMENTS

The requirements for each Grade of referee are summarized below.  Please see the Grade Requirements document for each Grade for the official and accepted requirements.  the requirements can also be found at the USSF website at www.ussoccer.com.


Grade 9

Requirements Document

  • Not currently being offered.

Grade 8

Requirements

  • Minimum Age - 12.  Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis and approved by the SRA.
  • Previous Experience - None.
  • Training - Complete the Grade 8 Referee Course through AZREF.COM  AND attend Field Training Session.
  • Laws of the Game Test - Pass the Grade 8 Referee Test with at least 80% score.  Maximum of 3 attempts.
  • Fitness Test - None.
  • Practical Assessment - None.
  • Recertification - July 1 through December 31.  Complete the Grade 8 Recertification Course through AZREF.COM.  

NOTE - Late Fee of $25 applies to recertifications after December 31.

In order to be eligible for consideration to attend Region IV Events (ODP, Presidents Cup, Far West Regionals) referees must:

Receive a passing assessment from a certified assessor within the twelve (12) months prior to the Region IV Event meeting the minimum guidelines established by USSF Assessment Criteria.  Games must USSF affiliated and with a minimum of 40 minute halves unless approved by the State Youth Referee Administrator (SRA).

  • Pass the state level fitness test

  • Those referees that elect to receive an assessment twelve (12) months prior to the Arizona Youth Soccer Presidents Cup and State Cup events will also be given priority of assignment at these events

  • Must have Refereed a minimum of thirty (30) Arizona Soccer Association Advance League and/or US Youth Soccer Regional League matches

 


Grade 7

Requirements Document

  • Minimum Age - 17.
  • Previous Experience - 50 games as Referee on U15 or above.  Must have been a grade 8 for 6 months.
  • Training - Complete the Grade 7 Referee Course through AZREF.COM AND attend Grade 7 Upgrade Class.
  • Laws of the Game Test - Pass the Grade 7 Referee Test with at least 80% score.  Maximum of 3 attempts.
  • Fitness Test - None.
  • Practical Assessment - None.
  • Recertification - July 1 through December 31.
    - Complete the Grade 7 Recertification Course through AZREF.COM.  
    - Attend at least 4 hours of locally-provided classroom training or field training.
    - Attend the Recertification Event in lieu of local classroom training (by invitation only).

Grade 6

Requirements Document

  • Conduct - State referee candidates must be in good standing with the ASRA with respect to USSF and ASRA Codes of Conduct and Ethics on and off the field, in public and all forms of social media and communication.
  • Minimum Age - 18.
  • Previous Experience - 50 games as Referee on U15 or above.  25 games as Assistant Referee on U15 or above.  Minimum of 1 year as Grade 7 referee.
  • Training - Complete the Grade 6 Referee Course through AZREF.COM AND attend Grade 6 Upgrade Class.
  • Laws of the Game Test - Pass the Grade 6 Referee Test with at least 80% score.  Maximum of 3 attempts.
  • Fitness Test - Pass the FIFA Sprint and Interval Test at standards established by ASRA or higher.
    Current standard is 6.8 seconds for the sprints, and 35/45 for the intervals.
  • Practical Assessment - 2 assessments as Referee.  1 assessment as Assistant Referee.  Games must be USSF-affiliated with minimum of 40 minute halves.  Must be done by two different State Assessors.  One assessment must be on an adult game.
  • Recertification 
    - Attend Recertification Event held second weekend of August.  
    - Complete the Grade 6 Recertification Course through AZREF.COM.  
    - Pass Fitness Test.  One held prior to Recertification Event.  It is your responsibility to enter fitness date in OMS on AZREF.COM.
    - Pass 2 (two) assessments as Referee.  It is your responsibility to enter assessment dates in OMS on AZREF.COM
    - Complete requirements prior to December  31.  If not complete you will automatically be downgraded to a grade 7 on 1 Jan 2019.  Once requirements have been met you can request to be upgraded and there will be a 30.00 mid year upgrade fee required by USSF.
