Getting Uniforms and Equipment

One of your first tasks now will be to obtain a uniform and the proper tools and equipment for your new adventure.

WHERE SHOULD I BUY MY UNIFORM?

The official referee uniform supplier to US Soccer is Official Sports International.  They offer  new referee Starter Kits which contain all the basics you need to get started.  As an Arizona referee, you can get a discount by mailing, phoning, or faxing your order to Official Sports and mentioning the following brochure:

Although Official Sports is the preferred uniform supplier of US Soccer and ASRA, uniforms purchased elsewhere are acceptable.

Note that the uniform style was changed in July 2016.  This new style will become the required style by 2018.  It is strongly suggested that you avoid purchasing the previous style uniforms, which may be on sale at some retailers.

WHAT COLOR(S) SHOULD I BUY?

The primary color for soccer referees is gold.  In Arizona, the secondary color is usually green.  Starting out, you only need to have gold, but it is encouraged to have both gold and green.  As you referee longer and at higher levels, you may purchase the additional colors at your discretion.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'PRO' AND 'ECONOMY' JERSEYS?

The 'Pro' jerseys have a zipper on the neck opening and velcro tabs closing the chest pockets.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO HAVE?

In addition to the referee jersey, you should have:

  • Black shorts
  • Black socks with three white stripes (or two stripes from Official Sports)
  • Black shoes (may have other accent colors)
  • At least one watch (many referees wear two in case one fails)
  • Set of Flags (any flag design is acceptable)
  • Whistle
  • Yellow and red cards
  • Paper or index cards
  • Pen or pencil
  • Flipping coin

As this equipment adds up, you may prefer to have a dedicated referee bag to carry all your gear.
